Lena gave Axl a soft laugh. He was right. She could look at him every day for the rest of her life, and she knew the sight would never lose its appeal. He was thinking something close to the same thing, too. She could see it in his potent gaze and knew his statement had been a double entendre.

She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, needing to get out the rest before she lost her nerve. “Everything I told you about that night, about my parents and Amelia, was leading up to something no one else knows. Not even my grandparents.”

She had kept the promise she’d made to Amelia to herself for sixteen years, but Axl needed to know the truth.

“I won’t tell another soul.”

Lena nodded, knowing he wouldn’t. “I will. Wes needs to know, too.” She thought about Wes for a moment and then narrowed her gaze at Axl. “How much has he told you about the other night?”

The corners of Axl’s lips twitched. “Everything except the explicit details. I didn’t really want to hear those.”

Lena closed her eyes and briefly bowed her head. She had expected as much, but the confirmation brought heat to her cheeks. “Do I owe you an apology?”

He shook his head. “What you and Wes have going on was building to a flashpoint a long time before I came to Cherish. I figured that out and would’ve stepped back if he hadn’t brought me into it.”

Lena held his gaze and gave him the truth. “I’m glad he did.”

Surprise moved through his intense green eyes before sheer emotions filled them. “I’m glad he did, too.”

“That night,” Lena said after a moment, getting back to her story, “it changed me and not only in the obvious ways. I was only twelve, but I was in my room, watching the flames, and… I was scared, of course, terrified, but through it, I felt something else. I was like that fire built something in me.” She stopped and shook her head. “No, it’s more like it awakened something inside me. Then Amelia pulled me out of that house, and I knew what I was going to be when I grew up.” She gave Axl a quick smile and added, “So to speak.”

“Some say firefighting runs in the blood,” Axl commented. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be hereditary. Some people are just born with it and eventually discover it’s their path.”

“Is that what you did? Somehow discover it was your path?”

He stretched his long legs out in front of him and flattened his large hands on the boulder on either side of narrow hips. “I was a dumbass, at least at first. I got into firefighting because I saw the attention the uniform got from all the ladies.”

Lena threw her head back and laughed. “You were one of those guys, huh?”

He nodded and grinned at her. “Guilty as charged. That’s how I was all the way through the academy and for the better part of a year after that.
